On 27.12.2004, I happened to be working with a cosmic ray detector as an undergraduate experiment. The apparatus consisted of two parallel scintillator paddles and a discrimination circuitry to rule out terrestrial events.

During one of the experimental runs, our apparatus detected radiation from magnetar SGR 1806-20. This was quite fortunate, because SGR 1806-20 is (or was, at the time), one of the most powerful events of its kind ever recorded. A histogram of data from that day is shown below.
